At a ceremony held at the National Press Club in Washington, the organisation recognised the professor for an unprecedented recovery: the wild population has grown by 40 per cent to 1,426 individuals, the only successful recovery of a small cetacean classified as critically endangered

Global Humane Society, the international arm of the American Humane Society, has awarded Dr Ding Wang, a professor at the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the 2026 Wolfgang Kiessling International Award for Species Conservation at a ceremony held at the National Press Club in Washington, in recognition of more than four decades dedicated to protecting China’s freshwater cetaceans. The award was established in honour of Wolfgang F. Kiessling, founder of Loro Parque and a world leader in conservation.

The Global Humane Society’s Wolfgang Kiessling International Award for Species Conservation recognises outstanding conservation scientists who are bringing about significant change in the fields of conservation and species preservation. With the future of up to one million species at risk, it is vital that we celebrate and support the conservationists working tirelessly to save them.

For more than four decades, Dr Wang has been a leading figure in the conservation of freshwater cetaceans in China, dedicating his career to protecting the Yangtze finless porpoise following the functional extinction of the baiji in 2007. Thanks to his pioneering and highly influential conservation efforts, he has reversed the decline in the wild population of Yangtze finless porpoises, increasing their numbers by 40 per cent to reach 1,426 individuals by 2025. This achievement represents the world’s only successful recovery of a population of small cetaceans facing a critical risk of extinction.

Robin Ganzert, Chair and Chief Executive of the Global Humane Society, stated: “The Yangtze lost a cetacean under our watch. Dr Ding Wang ensured that it did not lose a second.”

“He reversed a decline that scientists had deemed irreversible, built a world-class conservation programme from scratch, and trained the researchers who will carry on that work long after he is gone. Wolfgang Kiessling created this award to honour those who refuse to accept that a species is impossible to save. There is no better embodiment of that conviction than Dr Wang, nor anyone more deserving of this year’s award,” added Ganzert.

Furthermore, Dr Wang established a breeding programme that currently houses 13 porpoises, providing a vital platform for scientific research, conservation innovation and public education. He also set up China’s first multidisciplinary cetacean conservation team, mentoring over 100 postgraduate students and training the next generation of conservation leaders. Building on this success, Dr Wang has helped to transfer and adapt these conservation strategies to support endangered river dolphin populations in Cambodia and Bangladesh.

“Dr Wang’s dedication to the Yangtze finless porpoise over so many years is an example of what can be achieved through perseverance in conservation,” said Wolfgang Kiessling, president and founder of Loro Parque. “For me, this award is about the recipients and ensuring that their work is visible, recognised and supported.”

In addition to being named the winner of the 2026 Kiessling Award, Dr Ding Wang receives a grant of $80,000 to continue expanding wild reintroduction programmes for the Yangtze finless porpoise and to shape the future of freshwater cetaceans through research and education across China and South-East Asia.

The following conservation leaders were selected as finalists for the 2026 Wolfgang Kiessling International Award for Species Conservation: Néstor Correa, founder and president of the Pan-American Conservation Association; Yadvendradev V. Jhala, senior scientist at the Indian National Academy of Sciences’ National Centre for Biological Sciences; Erica Pacífico, specialist lecturer at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP); Jonah Ratsimbazafy, president of GERP Madagascar; and Kerri Wolter, founder and executive director of Vulpro.

The Wolfgang Kiessling International Prize for Species Conservation was established to recognise, on an international level, those individuals who bring about significant positive change in the fields of conservation practice, theory and research. The committee for the Wolfgang Kiessling International Award is chaired by Christoph Kiessling, Cybell Kiessling, Dr Javier Almunia, Robin Ganzert, Brad Andrews, Dr Martin Böye, Dr Jon Paul Rodríguez and Rafael Zamora.

Previous winners of this prestigious award include Kathleen Dudzinski, director and founder of the Dolphin Communication Project and editor-in-chief of the journal *Aquatic Mammals*; Arnaud Desbiez, president and founder of the Institute for the Conservation of Wild Animals (ICAS) in Brazil; Professor Theo B. Pagel, Director General of Cologne Zoo (Germany); and Dr Jon Paul Rodríguez, former Chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission.

Wolfgang Kiessling is a world-renowned conservationist and founder of Loro Parque, one of the world’s most respected zoological institutions, twice named the world’s best zoo by TripAdvisor and renowned for the excellence of its facilities and its incredible work to save species on the brink of extinction. To date, the Loro Parque Foundation has saved 18 species of animals from extinction.

Kiessling was awarded the Gold Medal by the ornithological magazine *Gefiederte Welt* for the first successful breeding of the blue-throated macaw; he was also awarded the Gold Medal by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Gold Medal by the Government of Spain; he was named an Honorary Citizen of Tenerife by the Island Council and by Puerto de la Cruz Town Council; and he also received Spain’s highest honour, the Prince Felipe Award for Business Excellence.

Founded in 1972 by Kiessling, Loro Parque was initially created as a paradise for parrots and began with just 150 birds. The park, situated on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands (Spain), is now home to more than 4,000 birds representing 350 different species and subspecies of parrots, demonstrating its extraordinary success in increasing the parrot population. Loro Parque is also home to flamingos, cranes, penguins and swans, as well as numerous species of mammals and marine life. Whilst billions of people are depleting the planet’s resources, Loro Parque plays a vital role in education, science and conservation. In 2017, Loro Parque became the first zoo in Europe to receive Global Humane Certification, reinforcing its recognition as a world leader in animal welfare.

For its part, Global Humane Society is the international brand of the American Humane Society, the first national animal protection organisation in the United States and the world’s largest animal welfare certification body, which helps to verify the humane treatment of over one billion animals worldwide every year. The American Humane Society has been at the forefront of virtually every major advance in the humanitarian movement to rescue, care for and protect animals.
