The headquarters of the Canary Islands Government hosted the posthumous presentation of Loro Parque’s highest honour to the founder of Arndt Verlag, an international authority on the study and conservation of parrots

This afternoon, Loro Parque presented the 2025 Gorilla Award posthumously to Thomas Arndt, ornithologist, publisher and one of the leading popularisers of knowledge about parrots, at a ceremony held in the Assembly Hall of the Canary Islands Government Presidency. The ceremony, presided over by the president of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Kiessling, was also attended by the vice-president of the Tenerife Island Council, Lope Afonso, and the president of the Loro Parque Foundation, Christoph Kiessling.

The award was accepted by René Wüst, who continues to uphold a vital part of Arndt’s legacy as head of the publishing house Arndt Verlag, founded by the honouree.

The President of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Kiessling, dedicated his speech to paying tribute to a friend of the organisation for over four decades. “There are people who attract attention with their grand words. And there are others whose deeds speak for themselves. Thomas Arndt undoubtedly belonged to the latter group,” he said. The president of Loro Parque described him as a “modest and reserved” scientist, “whose great passion was always the fascinating world of parrots”, and recalled his visits, his lectures at the International Parrot Congresses held at Loro Parque and his conversations with the institution’s specialists, “always a valuable contribution”.

Kiessling emphasised that they both shared a conviction: “Scientific knowledge, responsible animal care and species conservation must always go hand in hand. Because we can only effectively protect what we truly know and understand.” He expressed his regret that Arndt was no longer able to receive the award in person: “We are deeply saddened by this, yet his legacy lives on: in his research, in his publications and in all those people to whom he was able to pass on his passion for these fascinating birds”.

The president of Loro Parque also addressed René Wüst to thank him for his presence: “With this award, we are not only recognising an exceptional scientist, but also an extraordinary, modest and unassuming person.”

The president of the Loro Parque Foundation, Christoph Kiessling, linked the tribute to the philosophy that has guided the organisation since its creation in 1994: “Throughout Loro Parque’s 54-year history, we have championed a very simple idea: to protect nature, we must first understand it”. In this context, he recalled that the Foundation has helped save 18 species from extinction and has participated in more than 300 conservation projects in 56 countries, in collaboration with 91 scientific institutions, and that its commitment to biodiversity now totals 32 million dollars.

Christoph Kiessling also highlighted the success of the 11th International Parrot Congress, held in Tenerife last September, which brought together more than 800 participants from 57 countries and to which Arndt was a regular contributor. “People like him remind us that conservation is also built on the knowledge we share. His contribution lives on beyond his lifetime and continues to inspire the work of new generations,” he said.

The scientific director of the Loro Parque Foundation and vice-dean of the Official College of Biologists of the Canary Islands, Rafael Zamora, offered a more personal account, recalling how he met Arndt in Tenerife, when the ornithologist used to visit Loro Parque regularly to photograph little-known species. “He had created the photographic encyclopaedia of the world’s parrots; it was the only comprehensive reference work where you could visually consult more than 300 species and their subspecies,” he recalled.

“Biology carried out in the Canary Islands, thanks to the synergy of researchers from all over the world who have come together here, thanks to Loro Parque and the Loro Parque Foundation,” concluded Zamora, who ended his speech with a word of thanks: “Dear Thomas Arndt, for all time, thank you very much.”

A specialist in Neotropical and Asian parrots, Thomas Arndt built an outstanding career that combined research, public outreach and participation in international conservation projects.

In 1986, he took over the coordination of the Spix’s macaw programme run by the Zoological Society for the Protection of Species and Populations (ZGAP), a project in which the Loro Parque Foundation was already playing a key role. In 1989, he was a founding member of the Fund for Threatened Parrots (FbP) and, between 1998 and 2017, served on the board of trustees of the Strunden Papageien Stiftung (SPS). His commitment was recognised in 2014 with the FbP Species Conservation Award.

His work also had a significant international dimension. As a permanent adviser to Burung Indonesia, an organisation belonging to the BirdLife International network, he participated in the planning, establishment and management of protected natural areas in Halmahera and Sumba, Indonesia, as well as in the development of environmental education programmes.

At the same time, as founder of Arndt Verlag, he spearheaded the publication of numerous specialist works on parrots, from his first books in 1986 to his contribution to the third volume of the *Kompendium der Papageienkunde*. He was editor of the journal *PAPAGEIEN* between 1988 and 2020 and of *WP-Magazin* between 1995 and 2020, contributing for decades to the dissemination of scientific knowledge about these birds.

Established in 2003 on the initiative of Wolfgang Kiessling, the Gorila Award honours individuals and institutions with outstanding track records in environmental protection, biodiversity and animal welfare, as well as those who have successfully built bridges between nature conservation and the business world. With this posthumous honour, Loro Parque highlights Thomas Arndt’s legacy and reaffirms its commitment to science, education and the conservation of endangered species – principles that also guide the work of the Loro Parque Foundation worldwide.
