The renowned British zoologist, who has spent a decade at the helm of Chester Zoo (United Kingdom), takes over the zoological leadership of the facility, backed by more than 30 years of experience in the zoo and conservation sector.
The Group’s president and founder, Wolfgang Kiessling, highlights the addition of ‘an internationally renowned professional who fits in perfectly with the values and project that we have been promoting at Loro Parque for more than 50 years.’
Loro Parque consolidates its position as a world leader in animal conservation with the appointment of Mike Jordan as its new zoological director. The Briton, who ran Chester Zoo (UK) for almost ten years, joins the Animal Embassy with the aim of promoting innovative projects in species welfare, conservation and preservation, as part of the group’s strategy to consolidate its position as a leader in its sector.
The president and founder of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Kiessling, highlighted Jordan’s appointment as a strategic milestone: ‘Mike Jordan not only brings an impeccable track record, but also a contagious passion for conservation. His arrival reinforces our commitment to zoological excellence and environmental education, pillars that have defined Loro Parque for more than 50 years.’ Kiessling took the opportunity to welcome him and wish him every success ‘in this exciting challenge that begins with us’.
For his part, Mike Jordan, an ex-army officer, worked in universities, conservation in Africa and in zoos for more than two decades, he expressed his enthusiasm, saying, ‘Joining Loro Parque is an honour and a real professional challenge. Here, innovation and respect for animal life are uniquely integrated,’ adding, ‘Loro Parque is recognised worldwide and being part of its team is undoubtedly a real privilege.’
During his time at Chester, Jordan led initiatives such as the creation of their Conservation Masterplan and animal and plant collection strategy for the coming decade and collaborated with the IUCN on conservation programmes and planning. His multidisciplinary profile, combining expertise in biology, field conservation, team management and international cooperation, fits in well with the model of Loro Parque, which has been recognised twice by TripAdvisor as the Best Zoo in the World.
Finally, the appointment of Mike Jordan follows the addition last month of Ricardo Fernández de la Puente and Raúl Díaz as directors of Institutional Relations and Communication, respectively, to the Loro Parque Group’s management team.
